How to Be a Successful Trainer

Duration:  3 days

Course Aim and Objectives   

The aim of the course is to introduce participants to the basic principles of adult learning theory and experiential training.  

 

Course Content

  • How adults learn – the adult learning cycle
  • Training and the training environment
  • Practical skills - communication and presentation
  • Training cycle 1 - needs assessment and design
  • Training cycle 2 - delivery style, participative techniques
  • Practical skills - visual aids and feedback
  • Training cycle 3 - evaluation methods
  • Facilitation skills
  • Reflective Practice

Expected Outcomes

At the end of the course participants should: 

  • Understand the theory and models of adult learning and development
  • Be aware of the practical steps of the training cycle
  • Be able to prepare and deliver effective training sessions by selecting and using appropriate aids
  • Know the practical ways to evaluate and review learning
  • Be able to analyse and appreciate their role and style as trainers.

Who Should Attend 

Home and field based staff of Irish and international NGOs and Irish lay/missionary organisations who are required to deliver presentations and feedback, train other staff and facilitate learning within their work environment.   

Notes  In this course there is an emphasis on participatory training methods which use a “hands on” approach to preparing and presenting training sessions. The course will also explore how to make the most of using training resources in an overseas context without having to be dependent on Powerpoint.  Participants on this course may be interested in other courses such as ‘‘Creative Facilitation’

Prerequisites 

Participants do not need to have any prior experience of training.
